Working out the timings of a wedding day can be a difficult
task, which is why so many makeup artists and hair stylists just
turn up at the very beginning of the day and hope for the best.
I organised 70 weddings in 2017, so I know a thing or two about organising wedding mornings and what can happen so we like to arrange them to military precision.
During the weddings my team and I direct - We always get comments off guests and wedding photographers as to how it is always so calm compared to that of a different weddings they had attended (that were not organised by me).
I often hear tails of how the Bride was really rushed at the end or that the artist didn’t give the bride enough time because of a bridesmaid taking up too much time or that the car was waiting for an extra 20 mins because they were running late, this happens so often and yet all of this can be avoided.
Here are my top Wedding Morning Tips!
TIMINGS WORK BACKWARDS!
It is time to work backwards! Starting with what time you are getting married.
1. THE WEDDING VENUE.....
If you need to travel to your wedding venue you can bet it’s going to take time to get there.
How are you traveling to the venue?
By Car, By Horse and Cart, Perhaps even by tractor yes this is a thing.

All of the above will take longer to get to the venue than anticipated so we normally
double the length of time it takes for a normal journey this you could find out by AA
AutoRoute and if the journey takes 10mins, you double it and so on.
2. NOW THE DRESS!.....
Brides always think it takes less time to get into their dress than it normally does.
This is because your experience at the dress shop was quick, but guess what – the dress ladies dress people everyday; it is their job so they are going to make it look very easy.
This is rarely the case on a Wedding morning and a corset dress can sometimes take an hour to put on. Don’t forget your bridesmaids will have to get ready too!
My rule of thumb – If it takes the dress shop assistant 20 mins to get you into your Wedding Dress – I would allow 40 mins on the Wedding Day.
3. THE DRESS! Part 2.....
Are you stepping into your dress or is your dress going over your head?
Why – well if you have just had your hair and makeup done, you really don’t want it to be smudged or your hairstyle wrecked because you’ve forgotten to check.
Several years ago I had a beautiful bride who wanted a really elaborate hair-style and full on makeup and lashes and at the last minute told me she had to put her huge dress on over her head.
The hair and makeup had taken us about 3 hours to do so I didn’t want a humongous mother of all dresses beautiful as it was ruining all of our good work, besides we didn’t have the time for it to be wrecked the cars were outside already, so I actually got into the dress with her (yes it really was that big) and directed the dress over her head and tactfully teased it over so that her hair and makeup stayed in tact.
That’s what I call going over and above the call of duty but it was also completely necessary, so my advice is to tell your artist which way your going to go into to it!
4. ASK PARTICULAR BRIDESMAIDS TO HAVE A TRIAL.....
Your makeup artist or hairstylist should let you know how they will deal with someone that takes longer than expected...
Ok, so its not uncommon for you to get a Bridesmaid who is very particular with her makeup and is now starting to eat up time on a wedding day. I would advise

that you have any body that is particular with makeup and hair to definitely have
a trial, that way the Artist will know the time to allow for them.
5. GET EVERYBODY HAVING HAIR AND MAKEUP WITH YOU AT THE START OF THE WEDDING MORNING.
Being late to a wedding is not just down to makeup artists or hair stylists, people can be running late too, its not uncommon for a bridesmaid or other party member to turn up late etc., so I always recommend the bride has everyone there at the beginning of your start time.
6. DO NOT GO LAST
Even with the best will in the world and following everything above, you could still run into a hitch (pardon the pun), so the last person you want to be rushed is YOU! So if you aim to go second to last, and I would personally make that hair (so your makeup has had time to set properly), that way, if anyone has to be rushed it won’t be you.
